How Does Spray-Foam Insulation Work?

From the temperature of the fridge and how our food is cooked to the temperatures in our cars and homes, many of our basic human needs require temperature regulation. It saves precious energy, decreases greenhouse gas emissions and reduces cost for both home and business owners.

A more sustainable society depends on human ingenuity and material science to insulate more efficiently. And Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) is one of the most efficient insulation products out there.

What Is Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation?

Spray polyurethane foam is an innovative foam, a plastic substance that’s sprayed onto an open surface in paint-like form. It expands to create an insulating barrier against wind and outside temperatures.

SPF ensures your conditioned air stays inside by keeping cold air out in the winter and blocking hot air in the summer. It helps save thousands of dollars spent on energy while also protecting the environment. It even protects your home from condensation and water.

You can choose SPF in open or closed cell form. Open cell foam insulation is sponge-like and maintains a flexible texture even after curing. Closed cell foam is rigid and better for shallow cavities and areas like crawlspaces, exposed to extreme moisture. When applied, it expands more than one hundred times.

SPFs can be used as a:

  • Sealant
  • Air barrier
  • Vapor retardant
  • Weather barrier

How It Works

Two liquids are combined to create the chemical reaction needed to product SPF. The liquids come in different containers, often referred to as A side and B side. Once they’re mixed, the chemical reaction is almost immediate, and the foam hardens quickly after that.

Unlike traditional insulation like cellulose and fiberglass, SPF can be applied with precision. Its unique properties allow it to form a continuous barrier inside of existing walls, drastically reducing air infiltration. When applied, it expands to create foam that insulates, air seals and provides a moisture barrier.

SPFs are generally used in walls of new homes and buildings. Installing it in older homes requires walls to be broken down and drywall must be reapplied after the job is complete. Homeowners also need to vacate the premises for at least 48 hours to avoid chemical exposure.

But, there is one nontoxic SPF — USA Premium Foam® Insulation. It’s the highest-performing insulation on the market, boasting a 35 percent higher R-Value than our traditional counterparts.

USA Premium Foam® Insulation Goes Where Other Insulation Can’t

Exclusively made at our Cleveland headquarters, USA Insulation uses a proprietary formula to create our one-of-a-kind insulation that is injected through small holes in a wall’s exterior. It’s an ultra-efficient and economical solution for retrofitting buildings without damaging or requiring the removal of drywall or paneling. Once we inject our foam in a home or business’ walls, the insulation fills cracks and crevices while forming around pipes, wires and existing insulation.

USA Premium Foam does not emit any harmful chemicals or unwanted odors. In case of a fire, it even acts as a barrier that prevents flames from spreading. It also helps suppress outside noise by up to 80 percent and blocks outside allergens from entering your home.

So, if you’re in the market to make some economic home improvements, choose USA Insulation. Our courteous and experienced professionals thoroughly examine your home and never recommend more than what’s necessary. Let us help you save money and enjoy more comfort where it counts most — home.
